Was ist das Ziel von Filmkritik?

Filmkritik ist im besten Fall eine Fortführung des Filmerlebnisses. Es ist einer von vielen weiteren Glassplittern, die die verschiedenen Lesarten des Gesehen widerspiegeln. Nur so kann ein Film sich selbst überleben, denn solange ein Werk die Kraft besitzt, verschiedenen Interpretationen Leben einzuhauchen, vermag er es auch selbst weiter zu atmen. 

What is the aim of film criticism?

At its best, film criticism is a continuation of the film experience. It is one of many more shards of glass that reflect the different readings of what is seen. Only in this way can a film survive itself. Inasmuch that a film can only breath life, as long as it has the power to inspire. 

Was darf Filmkritik nicht sein?

Das Ziel darf nicht sein das Werk ein für alle Mal zu erklären oder noch schlimmer: darzustellen. Erstens vermag das keine Filmkritik, zweitens würde das den Tod bedeuten. Denn Filme, die sich in Worte fassen lassen, sind nicht der Rede wert. So muss die Sprache Sprache bleiben. Sie kann bloß eine Tür öffnen, welche der Film ihr gezeigt hat. Wenn die Rezipient*in einer Filmkritik sich entschließt, durch diese Tür hindurch zu gehen, wird auf der anderen Seite sicherlich nicht der gleiche Film auf sie warten. Doch man wird sich ihm näher fühlen, als wenn man versucht ihn ohne Kamera wiederzugeben. 

What must film criticism not be?

The goal must not be to explain the work once and for all, or even worse: to portray it. Firstly, no film criticism can do such, and secondly, that would mean death. For films that can be put into words are not worth talking about. So words must remain words. And these words should only serve to open a door that the film has been able to conjure. If the recipients of a film critique decide to step through this door, it will certainly not be the same film waiting for them on the other side. Still, they will feel closer to the idea of the original work, than by means of simply trying to reproduce the film without a camera. 

Was ermöglicht Filmkritik?

Dementsprechend ermöglicht Filmkritik das Überleben oder Nachleben eines Werkes und ermächtig gleichzeitig die Rezipient*in des Werkes eine aktive Rolle in dessen Nachleben einzunehmen. Genau wie der Film selbst, muss die Filmkritik also eine kritische Reflexion über das Leben ermöglichen. Nur so kann die Rezipient*in die Fragen vertiefen, welche der Film aufgeworfen hat und sich ein Leben vorstellen, das sie mit neuen Antworten entscheidend mitgestalten kann. Denn was ist Film, wenn nicht eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Leben?

What does film criticism enable?

Consequently, film criticism enables the survival or afterlife of a work and at the same time empowers the recipients of the work to take an active role in its afterlife. Thus, like film itself, film criticism must enable a critical reflection on life. Only in this way can the recipients deepen the questions raised by the film and imagine a life that they can shape with new answers of their own. For what is film, if not an examination of life?
